I’m shocked I don’t see more Alltracks and Outbacks in Saskatchewan. This was an awesome drive.

A few years ago when I started to travel for work I really started to love this. I’d fly somewhere like Montana or Denver and get a rental car and work during the day and after work bomb down gravel roads exploring.
I couldn’t pack much more than boots and some basic gear and maybe flyfishing kit if I was being adventurous but just the exploring in its own was excellent.

I grew up driving roads like this. They are great fun until they develop a washboard. Then they are official No Fun(TM).

I grew up in the wilds of northern MN and now that I’m a city slicker I do miss flying down dirt roads at unsafe speeds.

That sounds like a lot of fun!
I’m also going to go ahead and blame you, but I’m starting to think about an Alltrak for my next car now. I found a new one still on the lot about 300 miles away. I have to go on a work trip soon, so I won’t be able to buy a new car until October, at the earliest, but I think an AllTrak may be in the running now.

This. Was pleasantly surprised to get our Outback on a gravel road earlier this summer while looking for a beach . But turned out more than 3/4 of that 10 mile or so stretch was washboard. Painful.

Don’t worry, I’ll probably ask a lot of questions and then change my mind like 7 times between now and then. But I’m definitely interested. Though I’m not sure if I’m ready to go all in on # wagon lyfe with both the AllTrak and the 245.
I remember you put some wheels on yours. Have you done any other mods? Whatever I buy is going to be my DD, I’ve got the 245 to play with, but I still love tinkering and would probably end up putting a few minor things on it (wheels, lowering, tune, catback, etc.)

Looks like you could land a plane on that stretch of road... not safely, of cou rse, but blasting down those backroads is likely just as unsafe... and much more fun.

To be honest, we learned that taking the washboards at speed, although quite dangerous, was the best way to smooth them out. Seriously, there was one section between my house and my best friend’s house that you either took at 50mph or 10mph. Anything in between would rattle the fillings out of your teeth.
